History

After the 2nd World War, when tuberculosis disease became widespread, Naki Köstem, one of the General Managers of the PTT, took initiative to ensure that his staff was treated, and he led to the establishment of a 50-beds Sanatorium and a 25-beds Preventorium in two 3-storey buildings on the land where our hospital currently operates. In the following years, considering the size of the land, with the orders of the Ministry of Health dated November 2, 1954, the Internal-Surgery Departments were added and it gained the identity of a hospital. It was ensured that there were training clinics in the areas where it was completed.

Department

It was established in 2010 and the first chief was Prof. Dr. Hasan Hilmi Muratli. In the same year, he started to recruit resident doctors for training. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baris Yilmaz is the chief of the staff, since September 2018, and; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eray Kilinc continues.

Our clinic has 22 fixed beds, 16 in the main service located on the 4th floor of block C, and 6 in block A, and the occupancy rate of these beds is one hundred percent. However, in case of need, other free beds of our hospital are also used, and most of the time, approximately 30 patients are hospitalized in our clinic.

Apart from this, our library is open 24 hours a day for the use of all specialists and research assistants in the service. There are printed periodicals and non-periodical publications-books, available books-magazines installed on the computer and computers-printers available for our use. In addition to all these, due to its location in the city and its facilities, it has the opportunity to reach all kinds of educational resources in a short time.

Training and Education

During the first year, the resident doctors usually works in the clinic and in the ER, but from time to time, the case is allowed to get in the operating room depending on availability. At the same time, they take part in the clinic examinations from the second half of the first year from time to time. In this process, they become competent in basic surgical prosedures such as patient follow-up, administration of the service, wound dressing hospitalization and discharge. In the emergency department, they learn the diagnosis and first interventions together with the senior resident doctor / specialist physician.

When it is thought that the residents get their second year are theoretically sufficient, they start to work more in the operation room and outpatient clinic. In the clinic, there is a working system that will always receive help and support under the supervision of specialist surgeon. In the operation room, they are often in the position of observer and are trained in basic rules and skills. They participate by acquiring increasing amounts of basic surgical skills over time. It is tried to keep their interests and wishes at a high level by ensuring their participation in the main sub-branches of orthopedics and different surgery procedures. Again, under the control of a specialist surgeon, operations are performed according to their development and competence.

Resident doctors’ third year is called middle seniority. Mid-level residents come out of the service routine, but they follow the work in the service by constantly attending the patient visits. However, they continue to work in emergency orthopedics, outpatient clinics and operating rooms. They have a level of knowledge that has acquired basic surgical approaches and acquired basic functioning in the outpatient clinic.

Fourth and fifth year residents are called senior residents and they often spend time in the operation room, but they continue to work in the outpatient clinic, although less frequently. Fourth-year residents have completed most of the surgical procedures, especially in the trauma area, and are in a repeat position. Last year residents gain observation and experience in elective cases in the operation room, and update their knowledge by teaching their knowledge and experience to their junior residents in trauma cases.

In their second, third and fourth years, with exceptions, they complete other rotations (Physical Therapy, Anesthesia, Plastic surgery and Cardiovascular surgery. It is ensured that all of the residents complete their compulsory rotations before entering the last year. Also, mostly in their last year, they complete the rotations of the patients who are not done enough in our clinic according to their wishes. Even if it is done in the country, they are encouraged and sent to foreign rotations in order to see other clinical applications.

Another issue that we attach importance to clinically is to ensure that our residents reach at least the number of publications sufficient to apply for the board exams during their residency. With our scientific study tracking system created for this purpose, all residents take part in at least 3-4 scientific studies, excluding their theses. Most of the time, they present these studies as oral presentations in the several congresses.

In addition, there is a course and congress follow-up system for all residents in our clinic. In this way, all residents are provided with the opportunity to attend all courses and congresses they want in line with their own interests, especially the courses and congresses recommended by TOTBID (Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association).
