EEG in children
Brain waves are evaluated in EEG examination. The electrical activity of the brain varies with age, with respect to the person's sleep-wake state.
The brain has been developing since birth, and accordingly, it also changes in the EEG regarding development at any age. With a newborn baby's EEG, normal EEG findings are different at 2 years of age and 6 years of age. For this reason, it is important to evaluate the EEG examination by an experienced person especially in children.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP EEG ANALYSIS IN BABIES, MILK KIDS, CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
As known, the electrical activity of the brain is evaluated in the EEG examination. In epilepsy, we can say that there are abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. This is a somewhat rough definition. With the EEG examination, we examine from which part of the brain this seizure originates, whether it is a specific (focal) or widespread (generalized) discharge.
Sleep EEG examination is very important for the diagnosis of epilepsy in infants and infants / childhood and adolescents. In the EEG examination, electrodes are attached to the scalp, and the person should remain calm, especially with their eyes closed for at least 25-30 minutes. Therefore, we can say that sleep EEG examination is mandatory for this age group to perform the examination. In addition, in many of the epileptic syndromes observed in this age group, pathological activity can be observed only during sleep, or the activity observed while awake can spread to other parts of the brain during sleep and become continuous in sleep (ESES). In this case, the patient's treatment protocol changes.
WHEN COMING TO EEG ANALYSIS
-The patient should have a full stomach
-Hair must be clean
- It should come without using synthetic materials for hair such as jelly or foam.
- If sleep EEG examination is desired, the child should be left without sleep at that night (should be hospitalized late and very early in the morning, such as 03: 00-04: 00) and not be put to sleep until the EEG examination is done.
The electrical activity of the brain is evaluated with EEG.
The central nervous system is examined with EEG.
Electrodes are placed on the scalp.
