MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM PAINS IN CHILDHOOD

Musculoskeletal system pains are third most common pain type after headache and abdominal pain in childhood. Joint pain seen mostly in childhood and is usually benign. Pain can be caused by trauma, overuse, hypermobility and growing pains. The most common pain area in children is knee, and followed by ankles, wrists and elbows. For long-term pains, sleep disturbances and fatigue may accompany the pain. High stress level and depressive mood in children and their parents are the most important risk factors for development chronic musculoskeletal system pain. These children may experience not only physical problems also emotional and social problems.

 HOW IT BE DIAGNOSED?

Diagnosis for pain in childhood is only possible with contribution of the child and family. The anamnesis of the child and the family, the observations of the physician and the family on the child are the key points that lead to the diagnosis. Detailed laboratory and radiologic examinations are requested when necessary. The multi-disciplinary approach is required to elucidate more serious reasons such as infections, inflammatory rheumatic diseases, malignancy that may be underlying for long-term pain.

 HOW IT BE TREATED?

Informing the family about benign joint and muscle pains, use of basic painkillers, and exercise programs suitable for the child's age and physical development are recommended.

When necessary, physical therapy methods are used to provide pain control. Children are encouraged to continue their school life regularly.
