LYMPHEDEMA

There are two different circulatory systems in our body: blood circulation and lymph circulation. The function of the lymphatic circulation is to deliver the fluid between the tissues and the various substances in its content to the venous blood circulation. Lymph circulation mainly consists of lymph vessels and lymphnodes.

In case of deterioration of the lymphatic system, sufficient lymph fluid cannot be absorbed. Lymph fluid accumulates between cells, creating visible and palpable swelling (edema). This is called lymphedema.

The occurrence of lymphedema is due to congenital (congenital) or secondary causes such as post-operative, mastectomy, radiotherapy, infection or injury.

Lymphedema is a chronic condition.

LYMPHEDEMA TREATMENT

Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is an application used in the treatment of lymphedema.  In the applications made within the framework of this method;

• Reducing swelling

• Reconstruction of the altered and hardened area

• Increasing muscle activity

• To accelerate the lymph circulation.

This CBT method should be performed by experienced healthcare professionals trained on this subject.

CDT is implemented in 2 stages.

1) Decongestion phase: It includes lymph drainage applied manually to the whole body, compression therapy with bandages and a patient-specific exercise program.

2) Care and protection phase: It includes hygiene and skin treatment, therapy with compression stockings and a special exercise program.

RECOMMNDATIONS FOR LYMPHEDEMA PATIENTS

1) Wash your skin in the affected or risky area with soapy water (preferably medical soap) every day and moisten it with a moisturizer suitable for body pH (ph 5.5).

2) Protect the lymphedema area from injury.

3) In case of pain, increase in swelling, temperature in your arm/leg, consult your doctor immediately.

4) There is no harm in doing your daily work. However, avoid excessive activities with the lymphedema arm.

USE OF LYMPHEDEMA COMPRESSION GARMENTS

2) Protect the lymphedema area from injury.

3) In case of pain, increase in swelling, temperature in your arm/leg, consult your doctor immediately.
