SHOULDER DISORDERS OUTPATIENT CLINIC – INFORMING PATIENTS

Research shows that shoulder pain ranks as the third most common musculoskeletal complaint in primary care after lower back and neck pain. Your shoulder joint is the most mobile and complex joint of the body, connecting your arms to your body and providing your upper arm with an extensive range of motion.

Shoulder pain can be caused directly by the anatomical structures of the shoulder, or it can be caused by neighboring structures such as neck, back, arm and even intra-abdominal infections.

TREATMENT OF SHOULDER DISORDERS

Treatments in shoulder problems vary according to the diagnosis of the disease. Anti-inflammatory drugs, hot and cold therapies, electro therapy (TENS, ultrasound, short wave diathermy, ESWT etc.),

And individual and disease-specific exercises are recommended for treating the shoulder problem.

Apart from this, shoulder injections (intra-articular injection, subacromial injection, supra scapular nerve block, etc.) are used for diagnosis and treatment.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO PATIENTS WITH SHOULDER PAIN

Please consult your doctor immediately, if you are over 50 years old and experience night pain,  weight loss or fever along with your shoulder pain, and if the pain does not subside with rest, and if you are a smoker or have a history of cancer, or if you are at risk for heart diseases. You have to avoid any daily activities which may force your shoulder. Please avoid lifting heavy loads, lying on your injured shoulder during sleep, and any repetitive movements that require you to lift your arm more than 90 degrees. You should take your medication as prescribed by your doctor and follow his/her recommendations on exercises and how to protect your shoulder.
